Lorsque sa m\u00e8re tombe malade puis meurt, son p\u00e8re est plac\u00e9 sous tutelle et la fratrie est divis\u00e9e, au grand regret de Meyer.<br \/>\nEn 1847, <strong>\u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e2ge de 19 ans, il part tenter sa chance aux Etats-Unis.<\/strong> Il arrive \u00e0 Philadelphie, vit dans un premier temps de colportages puis d\u00e9cide de commercialiser dans le nouveau monde la fameuse broderie de Saint-Gall.
